Few people realize how sophisticated and intelligent bats are. Merlin Tuttle knows, and he has stopped at nothing to find and protect them on every continent they inhabit. Sharing highlights from a lifetime of adventure and discovery, Tuttle takes us to the frontiers of bat research to show that frog-eating bats can identify frogs by their calls, that some bats have social sophistication similar to that of higher primates, and that bats have remarkable memories. Bats also provide enormous benefits by eating crop pests, pollinating plants, and carrying seeds needed for reforestation. They save farmers billions of dollars annually and are essential to a healthy planet. Tuttle’s account forever changes the way we see these poorly understood yet fascinating creatures. “Grips and doesn't let go.” — Wall Street Journal “It’s a terrific read.” — Huffington Post “A whirlwind adventure story and a top-shelf natural history page-turner.” — Sy Montgomery, author of The Soul of an Octopus “One of the best, most interesting books I’ve ever read.” — Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of The Hidden Life of Dogs

Ivanka Trump Will Become an Official Federal Employee

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Amid mounting ethical concerns about Ivanka Trump’s already central role in her father’s administration, the first daughter made this announcement today: She will become an official federal government employee, specifically a “special assistant” to President Donald Trump.

The New York Times reports the the decision to take the unpaid position stems from questions over her original role as an informal adviser. Critics contended the position allowed her to bypass ethics rules typically required of federal employees.

“I have heard the concerns some have with my advising the president in my personal capacity while voluntarily complying with all ethics rules, and I will instead serve as an unpaid employee in the White House office, subject to all of the same rules as other federal employees,” Ivanka Trump said in a statement.

The announcement comes just hours after Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Ma.) and Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) penned a letter asking Office of Government Ethics director Walter Shaub to address the issue.

“Ms. Trump’s increasing, albeit unspecified, White House role, her potential conflicts of interest, and her commitment to voluntarily comply with relevant ethics and conflicts of interest laws have resulted in substantial confusion,” the letter read.

Here’s a newly-relevant New Yorker story detailing Ivanka Trump’s role in assisting her father’s shady Iranian hotel deal.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of The Eighty-Dollar Champion, the remarkable story of the heroic rescue of priceless horses in the closing days of World War II In the chaotic last days of the war a small troop of battle-weary American soldiers captures a German spy and makes an astonishing find—his briefcase is empty but for photos of beautiful white horses that have been stolen and kept on a secret farm behind enemy lines. Hitler has stockpiled the world’s finest purebreds in order to breed the perfect military machine—an equine master race. But with the starving Russian army closing in, the animals are in imminent danger of being slaughtered for food. With only hours to spare, one of the Army’s last great cavalrymen, American colonel Hank Reed, makes a bold decision—with General George Patton’s blessing—to mount a covert rescue operation. Racing against time, Reed’s small but determined force of soldiers, aided by several turncoat Germans, steals across enemy lines in a last-ditch effort to save the horses. Pulling together this multistranded story, Elizabeth Letts introduces us to an unforgettable cast of characters: Alois Podhajsky, director of the famed Spanish Riding School of Vienna, a former Olympic medalist who is forced to flee the bomb-ravaged Austrian capital with his entire stable in tow; Gustav Rau, Hitler’s imperious chief of horse breeding, a proponent of eugenics who dreams of genetically engineering the perfect warhorse for Germany; and Tom Stewart, a senator’s son who makes a daring moonlight ride on a white stallion to secure the farm’s surrender. A compelling account for animal lovers and World War II buffs alike, The Perfect Horse tells for the first time the full story of these events. Trump Calls Elizabeth Warren "Very Racist" for Claiming Native American Heritage

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Donald Trump augmented his attacks on Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday, slamming the Hillary Clinton surrogate for her claims of Native American heritage and calling her “very racist.”

Trump’s comments come on the heels of Warren’s first campaign appearance with Hillary Clinton on Monday morning. Warren kept up her fiery invective against Trump, describing him as “a thin-skinned bully who is driven by greed and hate.”

This isn’t the first time the presumptive GOP nominee—who has a history of racist comments—has accused Warren of “racist” actions and of benefiting from affirmative action. Earlier this month, the two faced off over his claims on Twitter:

Trump has taken heat for repeatedly referring to Warren as “Pocahontas” or “the Indian.” He responded last week that he regretted calling her that name—but only because “it’s a tremendous insult to Pocahontas.”

Scott Brown, the Republican whom Warren defeated for her Senate seat in 2012, joined Trump’s attack on Warren with a request that she take a DNA test.

Brown, now a prominent Trump surrogate, may still be sore from the verbal lashing Warren gave him at the New Hampshire Democratic Party convention earlier this month. “I hear Donald Trump is floating Scott Brown as a possible running mate,” Warren said. “And I thought, ‘Ah, so Donald Trump really does have a plan to help the unemployed.'”

During their 2012 battle, Brown called on Warren to release records proving that she had never received an advantage because of her heritage. She refused.

Elizabeth Warren Hits the Campaign Trail for Clinton

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

It might have taken Elizabeth Warren a bit longer than most of her Democratic colleagues in the Senate to endorse Hillary Clinton, but she’s making up for lost time to boost the party’s presumptive presidential nominee. The Clinton campaign announced Wednesday that Clinton and the liberal senator from Massachusetts are headed to Cincinnati, Ohio, to share the stage on Monday at their first public event together this election.

The Ohio event might be a trial run for many coming joint appearances later this fall. Warren is reportedly being vetted as potential vice presidential running mate for Clinton. The two met in Washington, DC, two weeks ago, after Warren endorsed Clinton, and last Friday Warren swung by Clinton’s headquarters in Brooklyn to rally her staff. “Don’t screw this up,” Warren reportedly told the campaign team.

Elizabeth Warren Mocks Trump on Twitter, and Goads Him Into Striking Back

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) ramped up her attacks on Donald Trump on Wednesday, this time taking to Twitter to assail the Republican presidential candidate for what she sees as sexism.

Warren also called out Trump University, the real estate magnate’s eponymous “university” that is currently under investigation for allegedly scamming its students, along with his position on Wall Street regulation.

Not one to refuse a good social media sparring, Trump responded to Warren’s latest tweetstorm by claiming she chose not to enter the presidential race because of her “phony Native American heritage.” In doing so, Trump made sure to re-up the nickname he recently coined for her, “Goofy Elizabeth Warren.” (Trump has made a habit of disparaging his opponents with similar epithets, a practice that introduced the political world to “Lyin’ Ted” and “Little Marco.”)

Wednesday’s back-and-forth comes as Warren embraces her role as a Democratic attack dog in the upcoming general election. Warren concluded her tweetstorm on Wednesday on a sharp note.

Elizabeth Warren Lists All the Ways She Considers Trump a "Loser"

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

In a Twitter rampage on Monday afternoon, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) enumerated all the ways in which she considers Donald Trump a loser. The liberal favorite launched a barrage of critiques at the Republican presidential candidate, tweeting about everything from the Trump University fiasco to Trump’s numerous corporate bankruptcies. She repeatedly called him a “loser” and concluded, “It’s our job to make sure @realDonaldTrump ends this campaign every bit the loser that he started it.”

Hillary Wants a Piece of the Elizabeth Warren Love Fest

Mother Jones

Hillary Clinton desperately wants liberals to redirect their adoration of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) toward her presidential campaign.

Since the official launch of her 2016 run earlier this month, Clinton has done everything she can to cozy up to Warren and publicly channel the spirit of the Massachusetts senator. Clinton has bemoaned hedge funders paying lower tax rates and called out CEOs for earning outsize paychecks. She penned a fawning blurb about Warren for Time‘s list of the world’s 100 most influential people. “Elizabeth Warren never lets us forget that the work of taming Wall Street’s irresponsible risk taking and reforming our financial system is far from finished,” Clinton wrote. “And she never hesitates to hold powerful people’s feet to the fire: bankers, lobbyists, senior government officials and, yes, even presidential aspirants.”

Beyond this broad political rhetoric, Clinton so far has been unwilling to reveal where exactly her views align with Warren’s. She launched her campaign by traveling to Iowa and New Hampshire for a “listening tour” of sorts, with detailed ideas promised to come later in the year. A spokesman for the Clinton campaign declined to say if Hillary Clinton would support a list of specific ideas proposed by Warren, such as breaking up big banks and imposing new taxes on financial transactions.

“As Hillary Clinton said last week, Elizabeth Warren is a champion of working families and scourge of special interests,” Clinton spokesman Jesse Ferguson said in a statement to Mother Jones. “The campaign is only two weeks old and we will be detailing our policy agenda after our ramp up period ends this summer but Elizabeth Warren and Hillary Clinton share a record of and a commitment to fighting for everyday Americans and their families.”
