Ted Cruz Endorses Trump After Calling Him a "Sniveling Coward"

For months, Ted Cruz has refused to endorse Donald Trump, making Cruz a hero to some Republicans who remain opposed to Trump. But that ended on Friday when Cruz announced he would support his former rival.

“After many months of careful consideration, of prayer and searching my own conscience, I have decided that on Election Day, I will vote for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump,” Cruz wrote in a Facebook post.

At the Republican National Convention in July, rather than endorse Trump, Cruz urged Republicans to “vote your conscience,” drawing shouts and boos from the audience. On Friday, he said his own conscience told him to support Trump. “If Clinton wins, we know—with 100% certainty—that she would deliver on her left-wing promises, with devastating results for our country,” he wrote. “My conscience tells me I must do whatever I can to stop that.”

Cruz had some good reasons not to endorse Trump, stemming from the nasty primary battle between them. Trump has repeatedly attacked members of Cruz’s family. In February, Trump went after Cruz’s wife, Heidi, threatening in a tweet to “spill the beans” about her. Trump then retweeted an unflattering photo of Heidi next to a better one of his own wife, Melania.

Cruz’s response: “Donald, you’re a sniveling coward. Leave Heidi the hell alone.”

But Trump wasn’t done going after Cruz’s family. Toward the end of the primary, Trump suggested that Cruz’s father might have been involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. When Cruz refused to endorse Trump at the convention this summer, Trump promptly revived this accusation.

Cruz cited these attacks to defend his decision not to endorse Trump at the Republican National Convention in July. “I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father,” he said at the time. Now his habits appear to have changed.

John Oliver Tears Into "Self-Serving, Half-Man" Donald Trump and His Response to Khizr Khan

During the Democratic National Convention last week, Khizr Khan, the father of an American soldier who was killed in Iraq, delivered a scathing rebuke of Donald Trump, in which he claimed the Republican nominee knew nothing about making sacrifices. Trump responded to the speech by attacking Khan’s wife to insinuate that she was “not allowed” to speak at the convention because of the couple’s religion. Trump also argued that he, like the Khan family, has made plenty of sacrifices by creating “tens of thousands of jobs.”

Trump’s remarks sparked bipartisan condemnation. And on Sunday, John Oliver joined the chorus of widespread criticism of the real estate magnate, or as the Last Week Tonight host called a “damaged, sociopathic narcissist.”

“No, they are absolutely not,” Oliver said after airing the clip of Trump likening his business success to sacrifices. “They are self-serving half truths from a self-serving half-man who has somehow convinced half the country that sacrifice the same thing as success.”

Baltimore Mayor Replaces Debbie Wasserman Schultz at Convention Podium

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has officially gaveled in the first day of the Democratic National Convention, replacing outgoing Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz at the podium.

The Sun Sentinel reports that Wasserman Schultz asked Rawlings-Blake to replace her, ending speculation about the type of reception the DNC chair would have received from delegates on the floor this afternoon, after leaked emails revealed apparent favoritism toward Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the DNC. Earlier today, Wasserman Schultz was booed during her speech at a Florida delegation breakfast.

But Wasserman Schultz’s replacement has also faced her share of criticism from the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. Rawlings-Blake drew significant criticism after her controversial handling of the unrest in Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody last April. Rawlings-Blake currently serves as the secretary of the Democratic National Committee.

Wasserman Schultz, a congresswoman from Florida, announced her resignation from the DNC leadership on Sunday and will officially step down as chair after the convention ends on Thursday.

Today’s change at the podium is one of many signs that Wasserman Schultz will be a party leader in name only during this week’s Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Rep. Marcia Fudge of Ohio will replace Wasserman Schultz as the official chair of the convention, and Donna Brazile, the DNC’s vice-chair for voter registration and participation, will serve as the interim DNC chair until a permanent replacement is named.

Protesters Arrested in Cleveland After Trying to Burn American Flags

Eighteen people were arrested Wednesday afternoon after an activist lit an American flag on fire outside the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Flag-burning is protected free speech under the First Amendment, but in a statement, police said that “a demonstrator also lit himself on fire and those around him due to the close proximity” and that two officers were assaulted by demonstrators. According to police, the demonstrators were arrested for assault, failure to disperse, and resisting arrest.

The arrests on Wednesday mark the most significant conflict between protesters and police so far during the convention, which has seen mostly peaceful protests by various groups. On Tuesday, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones barged his way into Cleveland’s Public Square to confront a group of communists, nearly triggering a brawl. No arrests were made in that situation, and police characterized it as a “small shoving match.” In total, more than 20 protesters have now been arrested during the convention, with charges ranging from criminal mischief related to climbing a flag pole to hang a banner to stealing a gas mask from a police car, according to police.

On Wednesday, shortly after 3 pm local time, a group from the Revolutionary Communist Party ignited an American flag in front of one of the gated entrances to the convention site, where delegates pass through security on their way into Quicken Loans Arena. After announcing that the group supported neither Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump, a man lit the flag on fire. USA Today reported that the man was Gregory “Joey” Johnson. Johnson is the man who lit an American flag on fire in 1984 at the Republican National Convention in Dallas, which led to a 1989 Supreme Court ruling establishing that burning an American flag is protected under by the Constitution.

In this video, a Cleveland police officer can be seen trying to put the flames with what police say was a fire extinguisher, before the police move in and grab the protesters:

You can see a clearer picture of the scene here:

Another protester was subsequently arrested about a block from the first incident after trying to set another American flag on fire.
